Some time in the early 2000's, Nate Miller had been playing music with me. He would add guitar parts to my already written songs. At this point he had never really shared his songwriting with anyone. One night at the coffee shop (Cellar Door), when we were still doing renovations, before we actually opened, Nate asked if I wanted to hear a few songs he wrote. He took my acoustic and played me the song "Fight and Flight". It blew my mind, his melodies were soaring and robust and his voice was incredible.
I told him to forget my stuff, let's start a band with HIS music. And that night Fertility Hollis was born. Nate played guitar and sang, Brandon Lichtinger played lead guitar, Jordan Reid played bass, and I played drums and sang harmonies.
For a few years there, Nate was one of my closest friends. We started to go down different paths in life and lost touch for a few months. That happens frequently among friends, but things always come back around again. This time they didn't. I never thought that I would never see him again. He is greatly missed and was loved by many, and not a day goes by that I don't think about him.
